Evaluating Heuristics Used When Designing Product Costing Systems

چکیده
Please do not cite without permission We appreciate the many helpful comments from Design choices regarding the features of a product costing system significantly influence the accuracy of reported costs used in product-and capacity planning decisions. Using simulations, we examine how an amalgam of system design choices influences the error in reported costs. We focus on popular heuristics / rules for grouping resources into cost pools and on methods for determining the driver for cost pools that contain many resources. We also model alternate ways to translate the vague guidance in the literature to implementable rules. We find that correlation-based methods (that follow the prescription to combine " like " resources) are superior to size-based methods (such as the Willie Sutton rule) when selecting the resources combined to form an activity cost pool. Taking information requirements into account, we provide guidance on how such correlation-based rules might be implemented. In addition, we find that combining information from several resources in an index to use as the cost driver achieves economically significant gains in accuracy relative to using a driver based on the largest resource and might beat a driver that considers all resources in an activity pool. By varying properties of the underlying production environment, we also speak to the generalizability of our findings.

Evaluating alternative MPS development methods using MCDM and numerical simulation
One of the key elements in production planning hierarchy is master production scheduling. The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare thirteen alternative MPS development methods, including multi-objective optimization as well as twelve heuristics, in different operating conditions for multi-product single-level capacity-constrained production systems. We extract six critical criteria from...
متن کاملThe Integrated Activity - Based Costing and Economic Value Added Information System
This paper examines the implementation of an integrated Activity-Based Costing and Economic Value Added system, using a database approach. The proposed database approach allows the creation of a costing and performance measure system which provides decision-makers with up-to-date, complete, and reliable cost information. The steps for designing and implementing this integrated information syste...
متن کاملThe Use of Activity-based Costing, Uncertainty, and Disassembly Action Charts in Demanufacture Cost Assessments
In this paper, the development of an Activity-based Cost (ABC) model is presented for use in design for demanufacture under the presence of uncertainty. Demanufacture is defined as the process opposite to manufacturing involved in recycling materials and product components after a product has been taken back by a company. The crux in developing an ABC model is to identify the activities that wi...
متن کاملOn the determinants of costing system robustness to errors
When decisions are made on the basis of reported product cost, even modest distortions in product cost may create significant distortions in decision-making. But costing systems are unlikely to be error-free. On the other hand, firms' budgets to enhance costing accuracy are typically constrained, and should be used where they are most effective. There is little guidance available, however, on h...
متن کاملImplementation Procedures for the Risk in Early Design (RED) Method
Risk assessments performed at the conceptual design phase of a product may offer the greatest opportunity to increase product safety and reliability at the least cost. This is an especially difficult proposition, however, as often the product has not assumed a physical form at this early design stage. This paper introduces the Risk in Early Design (RED) method, a method for performing risk asse...
